The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) has been dedicated to spreading asbestos awareness for over a decade. As we continue spreading asbestos awareness with them during Global Asbestos Awareness Week 2016, we can think of countless reasons to ban asbestos completely, all over the world.
Let’s look at ADAO’s top three reasons to ban asbestos NOW:
Asbestos is a known human carcinogen
Asbestos is known to cause cancer in those exposed to the substance. Airborne asbestos fibers can be inhaled or ingested by an individual, and become trapped within their respiratory system, abdomen, and other parts of the body. Eventually, cancers like mesothelioma and lung cancer can develop as a result.
The United States and Canada are the last two industrial nations not to ban asbestos
More than 50 countries have banned asbestos as of 11.17.2009. With over 50 other countries banning asbestos use completely, it is frustrating to realize that the United States and Canada continue to put their citizens at risk for mesothelioma and other cancers.
The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that there are approximately 125 million people in the world who are exposed to asbestos in the workplace
Workers all over the world are still exposed to asbestos on the job. Banning asbestos manufacturing and use would not only protect these workers from asbestos exposure but possibly save their lives.
