Several families in Jackson, Mississippi, are suing Frito-Lay for the wrongful deaths of family members who worked at the plant in Jackson.
During the 1970s through 1990s, Frito-Lay employed hundreds of people at their plant. One of the employees during this time was Jimmie Ruffin. His son, Reggie, claims that while his father was employed there, he was exposed to asbestos which ultimately led to the development of mesothelioma.
Reggie Ruffin believes that the safety standards and equipment at the factory were subpar. He mentioned that unsafe conditions led to people becoming sick while they were still working at the factory.
Ruffin suspects that Frito-Lay was responsible for his father’s death in 2010 from IV lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. He started looking into the company and the factory in Jackson and found that others who worked in similar positions as his father had passed away from mesothelioma and other serious illnesses.
In the 1990s, OSHA required employers to inform employees of asbestos material in their buildings. Ruffin claims that they neglected to inform employees and did all they could to make sure those affected would not be able to receive compensation due to statute of limitation laws in Mississippi that requires claims to be filed within a three year duration after a patient either is diagnosed or has died.
